Head, Database Maintenance, UGA, 2001-
- Supervise the Database Maintenance Section consisting of two Units, Marking and Maintenance, with a total of 8 fulltime staff and 3 student workers through designing and developing efficient workflows and procedures; training staff in database structure, record maintenance, and other technical skills; and maintaining monthly statistics.
- Create an online interactive training tutorial which covers the basics of library catalog database structure, MARC records, LC classification, Connexion/WorldCat and working in the Cataloging/technical module of the Libraries’ catalog, GIL (Ex-Libris’ Voyager). Collaborate with staff on prototype development and usability testing. The tutorial is available at http://www.libs.uga.edu/catalog/tutorial/
- Identify patterns, investigate, and resolve maintenance issues such as complex conversion problems, database discrepancies, and antiquated data in need of updating to meet current practices and standards, in the catalog, currently consisting of approximately 4 million records. Create Access reports utilizing holdings and item record queries to identify discrepancies or areas for investigation.
- Coordinate projects and workflows to resolve large dataset problems in bibliographic, holding and item records, such as the Circents project (approximately 170,000 records) and Microprint Miscoded Call numbers (196,000).
- Consult on workflow development and coordinate database training for GIL with Associated Research Facilities, Owens Library (College of Environmental Design) and CML (Curriculum Materials Library). Assist in coordinating the working group to redesign the workflow of Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies materials, including identifying materials to be cataloged and developing a project list for cataloging non-book materials such as podcasts, video, and other media. Continue to work closely with members of the Libraries’ Cataloging and Systems Departments, Graduate School, and Honors College, in developing and evaluating the Ultimate database for electronic theses and dissertations (ETD).
- Participate in general library administration by attending Section Head meetings. Additionally, serve as a resource person within the UGA Libraries in the areas of database maintenance, emerging technologies and Web 2.0+.
- Serve as the Cataloging Department’s Web Editor through developing and maintaining the online Policy & Procedures Manual, which has served as a model for other departments within the Libraries. In 2007, began evaluating potential web based tools (del.icio.us bookmarking, wikis, and document management software) to facilitate better access to documents. As a member of the Web Advisory Group’s Secondary Pages Group, assist in developing the stylesheet (CSS) for the Libraries’ website and migrate departmental pages to the new style through recoding and restructuring pages.
